There is nothing more exciting than a home-town fashion show. Friends in the audience, friends walking the catwalk. This years Fiesta was the best runway show for Fiesta fun in San Antonio!

The tenth annual Fiesta Ole Fashion Show hosted by the Pan American League was full of colorful media personalities, civic leaders, Fiesta royalty and an explosion of vibrant styles. This was one fashion show where the audience was as much fun to watch as the models themselves.

This year’s official designer was Graciela of Graciela’s at the Yard at 5200 McCullough in Olmos Park. “I love Fiesta and the people of San Antonio,” Graciela said. “This is a time when more color is allowed and we love the electricity in our city and our clothes.” She is honored to be the designer selected again to bring the Fiesta Ole show for 2012.

“This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year,” said Herlinda Sifuentes, Pan American League President. “Our group began in 1947 when a city nurse was motivated to open a clinic in the area we now call Edgewood. She saw a need among lower income residents for good medical care.” They began by playing canasta tournaments and with garage sales, but through the years the group has narrowed their social work down to two main fundraisers. “We fund many needs in a variety of areas including continuing the health clinic and providing scholarships,” she said.

This show was way more fun than a canasta tournament featuring a little bit of everything from exotic ruanas, to Mexican ponchos, to sequined pants, to oriental jackets, to exaggerated sleeves, earthshaking prints, Western influences….all topped off with fabulous hats, floral to feather fascinators, and, of course, runway worthy shoes!

Vendors greeted hundreds of guests displaying their most colorful accessories and Fiesta decorations. This included this season’s popular tongue-in-cheek message bag…Don’t Worry Gringo, I’m Legal! The fun was legal and hit the audience with the same intensity as a loaded cascarone. Viva Fiesta!
The Fiesta Street Team included: Ashley Vaughn, Rachel James, and Samuel Wolf for the coverage!

As 2012 is upon us, and many begin to look forward to new beginnings, it is also a great time to look forward to a fresh spring wardrobe. Fashion for Spring 2012 is all about intricate details and girlishness, as you will find many pleated skirts, lace gowns and floral patterns. The season will be reminiscent of the 1920’s. Expect to see a variety of dresses with drop waists and outfits with loose layers that were the style of that decade. When searching for new outfits for Spring 2012, look for the following key trends of the season:

Frilly and Feminine Girlishness- One will be able to find this element through pleats in every form. Pleats will be seen on dresses, skirts, pants and shorts. There will even be “pleated” looking silhouettes found in peplum pants and dresses. Femininity also was apparent on the runways for Spring 2012, and many designers featured dresses and gowns with delicate lace detailing while exposing the woman’s shoulders and midsection.

Prints, Prints, Prints- Spring 2012 is all about the prints, and the prints will be seen in many assortments. The prints that will be apparent for the season will be florals and zig zags, and many garments will also take on the feeling of abstract art, featuring deco details.

Pops of Color- The “can’t go wrong” colors of black and white will be seen in many Spring 2012 collections, while other fashions will pop with the citrus and cool colors of tangerine, yellow, turquoise, green and royal blue.

While these Spring 2012 key trends should only serve as a guide to help you with the new season’s wardrobe, remember that the main style element to Spring 2012 – enjoy being a girl.

Let’s face it, the holidays aren’t just about opening presents and decorating the Christmas tree, they’re also the perfect time to glam up for all of those holiday parties! With cameras capturing memories all around you, make sure you’re on trend this season with these holiday party looks:

This Holiday 2011 season, you’ll notice many trends for dresses including: single shoulder dresses, baby doll cocktail dresses, dresses that sparkle with plenty of sequins and romantic dresses with ruffles and lacey details.

Bright and vibrant color is also on trend this season, and you will not only be seeing dresses in the festive colors of red and green, but also be hot pink, emerald green and royal blue. Of course, if one is a color minimalist, you can’t ever go wrong during the holidays with the classic colors of black and white.

Trends in holiday accessories will consist of jeweled tone heels, animal print heels, and heels with festive bows. Faux fur is the way to go this holiday season, and you will see the trend on handbags as well as shrugs being worn over cocktail dresses for cooler weather.

Although it is in season to sparkle and shine, be careful to avoid too much bling, as too much can appear as too much of a good thing.

To complete the look, play up your eyes with a smokey shadow and glossy lips. The holidays are also a time for big, voluminous hair with curls, or a simple up-do, such as a bun, both are on trend and super hot for the season.

Fashion Week San Antonio came to a conclusion a couple of weeks ago. The week was filled with innovative and creative designs – the result of designers working tirelessly for weeks and weeks to come up with designs that would WOW the San Antonio community. The end of the week showcased a group of San Antonio’s emerging designers at Sunset Station. The show was a great one, because the garments and fashions were so unique, but so very wearable – and that is important to a city like San Antonio (not known for its flamboyant fashion). There were some shows and designs throughout the week that also showed “outside the box” type of concepts and creation. Again, this is important for San Antonio – to showcase growth and big ideas in the fashion industry for the Alamo City.

All of this considered, fashion in San Antonio is growing and continues to grow. Thankfully, San Antonio has support, publicity and promotion that is being nourished by ambassadors across the city. Here are some things to keep in mind from a public relations standpoint when it comes to fashion in the River City:

1. Make it relevant: Take a look around San Antonio – it’s not the fashion mecca of the world, but we have the talent. For shows and exhibitions, designers need to make their looks relevant to the culture of San Antonio. Fiesta-themed events are always popular. So, one idea may be to create a pre-Fiesta fashion event, coaching individuals how to dress in a chic way, while still having fun with the flamboyance of Fiesta.

2. Support the fashion industry: There are many boutiques across San Antonio. In fact, one of the emerging designers from Fashion Week just opened up a boutique, Carol Reyes Boutique. Her designs have been featured not only in San Antonio’s Fashion Week, but also in Hong Kong’s. They are breath-taking. Go pick up one of her gorgeous dresses, sport it around town and brag about where you got it. When it comes to supporting and publicizing – you can do that on your own – with just a few clicks of a button.

Use Twitter and Facebook for what it is meant to do – share great information with the masses. Everyone wants to know where to pick up a great, classy dress or an outfit that you can’t get anywhere else. Encourage your friends and followers to support the local fashionistas! (And tag their page, if they have one.)

3. If you’re in the fashion industry, bring in talent from outside the city to show new works. Tony Harris Productions is a champ when it comes to showcasing a variety of fashion talent. He has held shows for designer Nick Verreos – showcasing his new line at the beautiful Alteza – and international designer JALPAR – a magnificent eco-couture Christmas show at the Pearl Brewery. These types of events inspire both local designers and the community as a whole to be the change we wish to see in the fashion community.

So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and support San Antonio’s fashion industry! It is supporting you!
