As 2012 is upon us, and many begin to look forward to new beginnings, it is also a great time to look forward to a fresh spring wardrobe. Fashion for Spring 2012 is all about intricate details and girlishness, as you will find many pleated skirts, lace gowns and floral patterns. The season will be reminiscent of the 1920’s. Expect to see a variety of dresses with drop waists and outfits with loose layers that were the style of that decade. When searching for new outfits for Spring 2012, look for the following key trends of the season:

Frilly and Feminine Girlishness- One will be able to find this element through pleats in every form. Pleats will be seen on dresses, skirts, pants and shorts. There will even be “pleated” looking silhouettes found in peplum pants and dresses. Femininity also was apparent on the runways for Spring 2012, and many designers featured dresses and gowns with delicate lace detailing while exposing the woman’s shoulders and midsection.

Prints, Prints, Prints- Spring 2012 is all about the prints, and the prints will be seen in many assortments. The prints that will be apparent for the season will be florals and zig zags, and many garments will also take on the feeling of abstract art, featuring deco details.

Pops of Color- The “can’t go wrong” colors of black and white will be seen in many Spring 2012 collections, while other fashions will pop with the citrus and cool colors of tangerine, yellow, turquoise, green and royal blue.

While these Spring 2012 key trends should only serve as a guide to help you with the new season’s wardrobe, remember that the main style element to Spring 2012 – enjoy being a girl.

Holiday 2011 Trends

Let’s face it, the holidays aren’t just about opening presents and decorating the Christmas tree, they’re also the perfect time to glam up for all of those holiday parties! With cameras capturing memories all around you, make sure you’re on trend this season with these holiday party looks:

This Holiday 2011 season, you’ll notice many trends for dresses including: single shoulder dresses, baby doll cocktail dresses, dresses that sparkle with plenty of sequins and romantic dresses with ruffles and lacey details.

Bright and vibrant color is also on trend this season, and you will not only be seeing dresses in the festive colors of red and green, but also be hot pink, emerald green and royal blue. Of course, if one is a color minimalist, you can’t ever go wrong during the holidays with the classic colors of black and white.

Trends in holiday accessories will consist of jeweled tone heels, animal print heels, and heels with festive bows. Faux fur is the way to go this holiday season, and you will see the trend on handbags as well as shrugs being worn over cocktail dresses for cooler weather.

Although it is in season to sparkle and shine, be careful to avoid too much bling, as too much can appear as too much of a good thing.

To complete the look, play up your eyes with a smokey shadow and glossy lips. The holidays are also a time for big, voluminous hair with curls, or a simple up-do, such as a bun, both are on trend and super hot for the season.

If you haven’t heard of Stella & Dot yet, climb out from under that rock you’ve been living under and check out the fantastic accessory collection on www.stelladot.com. These beautiful but affordable pieces have been featured in successful magazines all over the country including Lucky, Self and Vogue! I got the opportunity to talk with Christina Welch, an Independent Stylist with Stella & Dot, about the company.

The CEO and founder, Jessica Herrin, like many of us, was a busy mom that still wanted to have a successful career. Then, she was the co-founder of WeddingChannel.com and wanted to use her savvy business skills to help solve the modern woman’s dilemma: achieving success and balance through a career you love. Jessica felt that the typical home based business just didn’t deliver. With lackluster product, high pressure sales tactics, and old school marketing methods, inventory was ending up in people’s closets with little profit in their pockets. Jessica’s vision called for an entirely new concept that could guarantee women flexibility, reward, style, profit and fun. With an irresistible product and exceedingly personal service, a proven formula for passionate earning and personal success was born.

Before becoming an independent stylist with Stella & Dot, Christina managed the regional PR and special events programs for Macy’s West in Texas. After her first son was born and she was home with him for about a year, her book “Wear To Shop” (a fashion guide to San Antonio) was published. After a stint doing freelance events and public relations with the CE Group, she was ready to get back to her fashionable roots. One day she was surfing the Internet, she stumbled upon Stella & Dot. She discovered the site in 2008 when it wasn’t as big of a name as it is today but she was intrigued by the business team leading the company. She immediately joined and the rest is history. Christina summed up Stella & Dot in four words: Smart. Stylish. Revolutionary. Life-changing.

Today, she not only offers private trunk shows, but she and her team have built an international sales organization of close to 900 stylists from New York to Hawaii and just welcomed their first stylists in the United Kingdom. She built her business by following the simple formula that Stella & Dot has set forth: share the irresistible style through private trunk shows, share the opportunity to be a stylist with all, and then coach and mentor those stylists to the level of success they desire, whether it be to make a few extra hundred dollars a month or to make a 6-figure income. Best of all, anyone can be a Stella & Dot representative!

Her favorite Stella & Dot item right now is the Graceful Nomad necklace ($89). It’s an everyday piece that adds a subtle wow to any outfit. It’s made of a combination of labradorite stones and resin beads that are hand knotted and combined with a rope cord. They collaborated with Lizzie Fortunato, a NY-based designer who has been featured countless times in major fashion magazines like Bazaar, Elle, and Lucky. Most recently, Giuliana Rancic wore the Graceful Nomad on E! News and it’s also been seen in Lucky Magazine. Stella & Dot also just debuted their new handbag collection which is attracting lots of editorial attention for its design, versatility and style and has been extremely popular with trunk show guests. The new holiday collection also debuts this month. Christina is really looking forward to the launch of Style Society, which will allow trunk show hostesses and best customers to shop the design studio online with exclusive early access to one-of-a-kind treasures and limited edition styles, plus be eligible for monthly giveaways. For instance, in October, Style Society members could snap up a vintage Chanel necklace or bracelet that designers found on their travels!

If you’d like more information on Stella & Dot products, hosting a trunk show and earning lots of free jewelry or joining Christina’s team as a stylist, you can visit www.stelladot.com/christina. You can also reach her at christinawelch@sbcglobal.net or 210.823.0180.

Scorpion?  Flying Crow? King Pigeon? If you knew that these were all yoga poses, then you’ve probably visited Lululemon Athletica, a yoga-inspired athletic apparel company. I know that if I’m working out, I’m probably not looking my best, but this company understands a woman’s desire to be fashionable…at all times and keeps them looking that way with their line of stylish athletic apparel!

Jacki Carr, community relations coordinator for Lululemon, gave me a brief history of the company.

“Lululemon was founded in 1998 in Vancouver, British Columbia by Chip Wilson,” Carr said. “ Chip saw an exponential increase in the number of females participating in yoga and athletics, so he created Lululemon Athletica to offer technical, yoga-inspired apparel that was both functional and looked feminine. “

Jacki’s favorite piece in the line right now is the Wunder Under Crop, a crop legging for yoga (or any sweaty pursuit) made of their signature fabric, Luon, which is breathable with coverage, four-way stretch and flat-seamed. She also likes pairing the Wunder Under Crop with her Power Y Tank, made of the same Luon fabric.

Lululemon not only sells fashionable work-out attire, but they also regularly hold complimentary yoga classes in the store. They believe that offering classes will connect with their community, sweat with their guests and introduce them to yoga. All in-store events are open to the public, complimentary and suitable for all levels. When doing yoga, Carr says, you’ll find her doing the Vrksasana, tree pose.

An in-store yoga class

Lululemon strives to promote athletic leaders who reflect their core values through the Lululemon Ambassador program. Ambassadors include local athletes, instructors and/or role models in communities where there is a Lululemon store. Ambassadors lead complimentary, in-store classes, including yoga and running groups. They also test Lululemon product to the limits, then provide feedback on design, fit and function. For more information on the ambassadors program and the athletes in your community, please visit www.lululemon.com/community/ambassadors.

When asked to describe Lululemon in four words or less, Carr said, “Product, quality, integrity and fun, whether it is our locking zippers, cuffins, thumb holes or ponytail holders, everything has a purpose. By producing products that help keep people active and stress-free, Lululemon believes that the world will be a better place.”

Fashion Week San Antonio is just around the corner. From Sunday, October 9 – Saturday, October 15, fashion-filled events will grace the presence of stages and runways across the city. We are excited about this year’s fashion week, because we are truly involving the fashion community of San Antonio, and many designers, producers, hair and makeup artists and boutiques have the  opportunity to showcase their talents, products and designs.

Fashion Week San Antonio is a time for the up-and-coming designers, models and all fashion talent in San Antonio to cultivate the richness of the culture, style and fashion in San Antonio. This special week will truly provide a platform for these talented individuals to show what they have to offer in the realm of fashion to the rest of the community, and our hope is to expand the showcase to the whole southern region of the United States.

The Emerging Designer Fashion Show

I am most looking forward to the Emerging Designer Fashion Show that is going to be the headline show for Fashion Week San Antonio 2011. Although this is the third annual Fashion Week in the Alamo City, this is the first time that we will be having this particular show. The mission of the Emerging Designer Fashion Show is to offer a platform for aspiring designers living in San Antonio and surrounding areas to strut their designs down the runway and enhance awareness of their line, designs and fashions that they work so hard to create.

Fashion Week SA Making an Impact

Because of Fashion Week San Antonio and the many schools in the city that now offer fashion programs, San Antonio now has a fashion community – and it is one that is becoming more established each day. Ten years ago when I was in college, I was told that in order to make it in the fashion industry or in order to work in the fashion industry, you had to move to New York or Los Angeles. Now, that is not the case. We have so many people in San Antonio that have amazing talent in the fashion realm, and they are now able to showcase that through the platform of Fashion Week and actually are able to live out their dreams in our city.

Get Involved

Young designers can become involved in two ways: they can opt to have their own show during Fashion Week San Antonio. Interested candidates can apply to have an event at fashionweeksa.com, or they can audition to be featured in the new “Emerging Designer” fashion show that will be the headlining show during this year’s Fashion Week 2011. The auditions are taking place on Thursday August 18, 2011 at Sunset Station from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The applications and rules and regulations for this show can be found on the website.

Creative minds can take part of Fashion Week by volunteering for events and shows. For the opportunity to partake in the behind-the-scenes action, email fgisanantonio@gmail.com. For more details on all things Fashion Week, visit www.fashionweeksa.com.

Carrie Bradshaw said, “The fact is, sometimes it’s hard to walk in a single women’s shoes. That’s why we need really special ones now and then, to make the walk a little more fun.”

And whether you are a single woman or not I think we can all agree that the relationship between a woman and her shoes is a special one. Some ladies who understand this concept are the women behind the shoe shop, Solely for You.

Solely for You is a family-run business that brings shoe shopping right to its customers. A “shoe party” can be set up in the home, office or even a parking lot! The women behind Solely for You interview the hostess and find out her likes and dislikes, they then invite all of her guests using E-vites and after that the party is set. Solely for You wants to accommodate all the attendees of the party, which is why they bring in shoes sizes from 5-11 in various amounts of styles and colors. The one thing that holds true throughout all of their shoes it that they are all less than $30 a pair to help women stay sexy and sassy on a budget.

Solely is owned by Felicia Avery and her daughters BreLynn, Symone and Koren. Felicia describes her experience working with her daughters, “It is great working with my daughters, we always don’t agree on our inventory selections, and it makes it interesting to see what we decided on when I trust them and they trust me. I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything in the world.” She says that she strives to encourage her daughters to be entrepreneurs where they can learn the joys of making money and the importance of customer service and time management.

For the season, Felicia said that the wedge heel is one of the most popular shoes for the summer but that a classic pump or platform will never go out of style. She also says that lately, a popular shoe trend has been shoes with some sort of 3D embellishment like flowers. When asked what type of shoe she would be she simply responded, “Open-toed, 4” red stilettos. Everyone would see you coming into a room, confident and no matter if they hurt, I would still look good at the end of the day.”

First and foremost, I’m a huge advocate for the fashion industry in San Antonio. So it’s my duty to make sure that all of you fashionistas out there know about Fashion Group International.

In 1928, 17 women from all over the fashion industry met in a modest New York restaurant to discuss the need of a place for fashion in the business world. These same women would go on to create the by-laws and purpose for The Fashion Group International.

FGI strives to help its members develop into business professionals in the area of fashion. FGI provides insights on trends, connects members to already established professionals and helps turn a passion for fashion into a career for life.

I am honored to serve as co-regional director, along with Starley Murray, and wanted to take this opportunity to showcase FGI to all of you fashionistas out there! If you are looking to take your interest in the business of fashion to the next level, fill out an application on our website, and get connected! After you become a member, you will receive many benefits and services that will truly put you in an elite group of fashion professionals in the San Antonio area.

We have committees members can join, networking events like ‘Fashion Flocks’, and scholarship opportunities for those who qualify. FGI members can also stay up-to-date with the fashion world by attending events sponsored by members of FGI or the FGI itself! This fall, FGI will host the third annual San Antonio Fashion Week to showcase the Alamo city’s brightest and talented designers and brand houses by displaying their latest collections in a runway show or fashion exhibition. The Heat is On!

The mercury is rising, and the air is getting heavy – sure signs that summer is on the doorstep! But even in the steamy days of summer, you can be comfortable but still in step with the latest trends.

To beat the heat but still look great, consider the following pairings:

  • A  long maxi sundress with oversized Jackie O sunglasses and sandals;
  • White crops or linen shorts paired with a brightly colored tank top and great accessories;
  • A sundress – always a South Texas favorite – for the day – and a cool jumpsuit paired with heels for the evenings.

Avoid wearing anything that may be too tight or constricting as well as heavy fabrics, such as polyester, wool or nylon – stick with natural fabrics that “breathe.”

Summing it up for Summer:  the perfect outfit for South Texas is a brightly colored lightweight romper, decked out with chunky wooden accessories and wedge heels and topped off with an oversized brimmed hat.

Whether you’re seeking an evening gown for a formal event, a trendy designer outfit or a vintage ensemble – and — if your last name isn’t Rockefeller, Buffett or Gates, New York Exchange is for you.

Nestled in the heart of Castle Hills on NW Military Highway, Amanda Alarcon’s consignment boutique features designer labels and high end department store brands at delightful prices.  Plus, there’s a wide variety of accessories to complement each ensemble.

According to Alarcon, the shop features items everywhere from “size 0 to 4X,” as well as menswear and items for children. Creative displays featuring hats, accessories and vintage items highlight the color-coded racks.

Plus, you can count on quality. NY Exchange features popular labels such as St. John, Versace and Valentino, as well as vintage items from Neiman-Marcus and other high-end stores. Alarcon is picky about what they accept – everything must be in excellent to unused resale condition, and seasonal items that are not vintage must be three years old or less.

“We have something that will appeal to everyone,” Alarcon adds.

In addition, the boutique features the Motives makeup line, which they use for makeovers-by-appointment. And, there’s always something going on at the store. In fact, on May 21, the boutique will hold its annual clearance sale, with a portion of proceeds benefiting a variety of charities, including: SAMM Ministries, Special Needs Charities, Medina Children’s Home, St. Peter-St Joseph Children’s Home and the Battered Woman’s and Children’s Shelter.

Visit NY Exchange online at www.nyexchangesa.com or on Facebook for current information on promotions, sales and other special events.
